DOING THE SUMS

Alfa Romeo is currently making decent money, and this new B-segment SUV aims to be another string to the profitable bow. Boss Jean-Philippe Imparato says being in the black means Alfa has more freedom to plan fan-pleasing models like the upcoming 6C sports car and a replacement for the Giulia saloon.

SPLIT PERSONALITY

The new SUV won’t be BEV only. Like the Avenger, Alfa’s small SUV is expected to have mild and full hybrid models for certain markets. ‘There are no guarantees the hybrid will be sold in the UK,’ says Imparato, ‘but Italy? I know that it’ll need some hybrid versions, too, but it’s the same Alfa Romeo whatever the engine.’

JEEP TO THE RESCUE

The new electric Alfa shows the benefits of the Stellantis group’s approach to sharing. The Jeep Avenger – European Car of the Year – debuted with a refreshed e-CMP platform, which the Alfa will get. Expect a 51.4kWh battery pack and a 250-mile range from the front-driven model that’ll launch first, with e-AWD to come.

FINAL TOUCHES

While coy about the new SUV’s name at this point, Imparato says it’ll naturally ‘be Italian rooted’, potentially with a nod to Alfa’s heritage. The boss intends the new crossover’s trim structure will be as simple as the Tonale’s ahead of Alfa’s online sales expansion: ‘Two engines, two trims, two packs, five options.’
