2025 Volkswagen Tayron all-new seven-seater set for UK
New seven-seat VW due 2025. Tayron SUV shares platform with new Tiguan; offers petrol, diesel and PHEV power.
The next Volkswagen Tayron SUV is due on sale in the UK in 2025 as a successor to the seven-seat Tiguan Allspace, which will be retired after this model generation. The current Tayron is sold exclusively in China in both standard and coupé (Tayron X) bodystyles, but the redesigned Mk2 car is being engineered for sale in all of Volkswagen’s key markets, including the UK, officials at the German company have confirmed. “We will extend our existing SUV line-up on a global basis with the second-generation Tayron, which is already under development and will go on sale by the middle of the decade,” said Karl-Heinz Hell, head of engineering for Volkswagen’s mid- to full-size models.
Based on the new third-generation Tiguan (driven), the new Tayron will receive its own unique styling. As with today’s model, it is planned to support two bodystyles, the more practical of which is earmarked for sale in the UK with an extended rear overhang and the choice of either five or seven seats. A rakish, five-seat liftback variant is also set to be sold in China and North America.
At 4589mm long, 1860mm wide and 1660mm tall, the current Tayron mirrors the Tiguan Allspace. However, the Mk2 model is planned to grow in all dimensions. “The increase in dimensions for the next Tiguan will also be reflected on the next Tayron,” Hell told Autocar, adding: “We want to keep a similar differentiation in size between the two.”
In the UK, the new model will be positioned beneath the recently facelifted Touareg. It will sit atop the same upgraded version of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, as used by the next Tiguan, incorporating extensive suspension upgrades to boost refinement and dynamic capability.
It is likely to be sold in the UK with the choice of either a 2.0-litre turbo petrol or 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engine, with both offering a 48V mild-hybrid system and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard.
Volkswagen confirmed that it will also offer the choice of two petrol-engined plug-in hybrids, offering 201bhp and 268bhp, an electric-only range of over 62 miles and DC rapid-charging capability.
All drivetrains have been engineered to comply with the EU’s strict new Euro 7 emission standards “from the beginning”, said Hell. Depending on the engine, buyers will also be able to pick front- or four-wheel drive.
Today’s Tayron is built in Tianjin by Volkswagen’s joint venture with FAW. The new model will also be built in its home city of Wolfsburg. While the new SUV will retain the Tayron name in the UK, it is planned to be sold under the Tiguan name in other selected markets, including the US.
New Tiguan remains the same size but won’t get an Allspace variant. Outgoing Tayron is Chinese equivalent of current Tiguan. New Mk2 Tayron will replace Chinese car and Tiguan Allspace.
