Porsche Santa Clarita unveils throwback 930 Flantnose restomod
Porsche 911 G-Series and 930
For this year’s Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge, Porsche Santa Clarita has presented a 1988 Porsche 911 Turbo Flachbau, which was unveiled at the Werks Reunion in Monterey, California. The eye-catching entry was awarded the People’s Choice and Kids’ Choice awards. Born in the era of extreme design and wild paint jobs, the car found its way to Porsche Santa Clarita with fire and corrosion damage, making it the perfect candidate for a themed competition build.
The Galpin Porsche Santa Clarita team set about bringing the turbocharged 911 back to poster-worthy condition. The build pays homage to the nostalgia and style of the 1980s, while incorporating modern amenities and technology. The exterior was augmented with an X83 Flachbau body kit (incorporating 964 Carrera RS flourishes) and finished with a custom Rubystar paint job, complete with a racing stripe incorporating design inspired by Porsche’s seventy-fifth anniversary colour palette. Additionally, the engine lid was custom airbrushed. The interior, meanwhile, has been outfitted with turquoise leather punctuated by black and white pasha inserts. The instrument cluster was completely rebuilt to match the wild colour scheme and incorporates new genuine Porsche parts to create a custom look and deliver precise readouts. Drivers and passengers alike will enjoy this 911’s updated climate control system and revamped in-cabin entertainment, the latter centred around a Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) head unit linked to a Blaupunkt speaker system. The force-fed flat-six was upgraded to 3.5 litres of displacement and makes use of individual throttle bodies, pushing output to more than 850 horsepower. The engine features a custom-fabricated oil cooler system.
The transmission was completely rebuilt with a limited-slip differential and a dedicated fluid cooler. Suspension upgrades include components lovingly borrowed from the 997 GT3 RS, as well as ASP adjustable spring plates, although the headline act is a fully adjustable Motion Control Suspension (MCS) coilover kit with remote reservoirs in the frunk, which is also where you’ll find the audio system’s Blaupunkt amplifiers. Custom HRE multi-spoke split rims with colour-coded centres have been wrapped in Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 tyres. “This project is the most ambitious build we’ve created for the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge to date,” says Beau Boeckmann, President and Chief Operating Officer for Galpin Motors. “Despite this classic 911 Turbo arriving at Porsche Santa Clarita with fire damage and corrosion, we were able to transform it into a showpiece acknowledging the excess of the 1980s. Our goal was not only to restore this slantnose 911, but also to incorporate a unique design.” As for the engine’s extraordinary performance? “Simply terrifying!” he cries. Based in North Hills, California, Galpin Motors has established itself as one of the foremost automotive dealers in the United States. Family owned and operated since 1946, Galpin’s list of automotive brands includes Ford, Honda, Volkswagen and Mazda, as well as premium European marques, including Volvo, Land Rover, Lotus, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Porsche.
