Ford to launch New Electric Crossover Reviving Iconic Capri Name

Ford is gearing up to breathe new life into its lineup with an electric crossover, poised to resurrect the revered Capri name. Set for a debut in 2024, this vehicle, based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, recently made its public appearance, teasing enthusiasts with its revival.

Design and Features

Akin to a raised saloon rather than an SUV-coupé, reminiscent of classics like the Polestar 2, the reborn Capri boasts distinct design elements that set it apart from the Explorer. Notably, the LED headlights draw inspiration from the iconic later Capri models, showcasing a nod to its legendary namesake.

Performance and Specifications

Technically aligned with the Explorer, the Capri is anticipated to offer three electric powertrain options, ranging from 168bhp to 335bhp, paired with battery pack choices of 52kWh or 77kWh, enabling a commendable range of approximately 300 miles. Rapid charging capabilities of up to 170kW will further enhance its appeal.

Production and Launch

While initially planned to follow its Explorer counterpart by six months, the Capri's launch may align more closely due to the Explorer's delay to mid-2024. This setback is attributed to compliance requirements with impending battery legislation, leading both models to potentially hit the market simultaneously.

Ford's Design Vision

Amko Leenarts, Ford's Europe chief designer, emphasizes the significance of historical names in Ford's electric evolution. Leenarts envisions a delicate balance between the heritage of established names and their contemporary reinterpretation, citing examples like the Puma and Mustang. He believes that reintroducing iconic badges into new segments resonates with consumers, offering a unique perspective.

Embracing Electrification

According to Leenarts, the shift toward electrification presents an opportune moment to cater to evolving customer demands, marking a significant transformation in Ford's design philosophy since the late 1990s New Edge ethos.
