2022 BMW X3 G01 and 2022 BMW X4 G02 get mid-life update

BMW has refreshed its X3 and X4 SUVs, giving the cars a minor external update, as well as tweaked cabins and updated equipment levels. The revamped cars are already available to order in the UK with prices starting at £44,310 and £49,010 respectively.

Among the most obvious external updates is the enlargement of the grille, which now sees the two panels joined across the middle. The front headlights have also been tweaked, becoming 10mm flatter and featuring full LED technology as standard. There are alterations to the bumpers, too, and there are narrower rear light graphics. Inside, the cars get a centre console from the 4 Series, while the freestanding infotainment screen has grown to 12.3 inches as standard. Three-zone climate control is also included, and there’s a new range of upholstery for the more rugged-looking xLine models.

Other updates to the kit list include a new navigation system that comes as part of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional set-up. The system now offers greater personalisation of displays, while the cloud-based mapping system is designed to make route calculation faster, as well as being easier to select a destination. Under the bonnet, BMW has fitted a range of diesel engines that use mild-hybrid technology, as well as a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid in the case of the X3 G01. Things kick off with the 2.0-litre, 188bhp 20d engine, before moving up to the 3.0- litre, 282bhp 30d. But maximum performance can be found from the M40d unit, which is an even more powerful version of the 30d’s 3.0-litre straight six. With 335bhp on tap, it’ll get from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds, before hitting a limited 155mph top speed.

The 30e plug-in hybrid on the X3, meanwhile, uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor to provide a combined 248bhp and four-wheel drive. It’ll manage up to 31 miles on electricity alone, allowing it to emit between 43 and 58g/km of CO2. It’s also capable of 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 130mph.

BMW has already begun taking orders for the new X3 and X4, but the car won’t go into production until August, while UK deliveries are set to arrive at BMW dealerships in September. G01 X3 models are offered in a choice of xLine, M Sport or M40d specifications, while the more dynamic X4 is restricted to the two upper trim levels of its more practical compatriot.
