Polestar 3 to be built in the USA
Swedish EV manufacturer Polestar has teased new details for its 3 SUV, which is due to arrive in 2022. The new model will go head-to-head with the Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model X, and even when hidden beneath a sheet in the photo below, the 3 already looks like it will have a dramatic silhouette.
The firm has also confirmed the Polestar 3 will be built in South Carolina, transforming Polestar into ‘a truly global brand’, with manufacturing capabilities in the world’s two largest EV markets – the USA and China. Volvo Group’s Ridgehill plant currently manufactures the Volvo S60 and is set to build the next XC90 SUV there alongside the Polestar 3.
Sitting on the same all-new SPA2 platform as the upcoming XC90, the 3 has been given sleek looks to separate it from the Volvo. Polestar describes the 3 as an ‘aerodynamic electric performance SUV’, which is likely to take styling direction from the Precept design study shown off in 2020.
Polestar also says the 3 will feature industry-leading connectivity, thanks to its Android Automotive OS infotainment system, and that it will boast ‘high-end’ autonomous driving features. While not yet confirmed, a driving range of between 300 and 350 miles is anticipated. Rather than sitting in Volvo dealerships, prospective owners will be able to see the 3 in ‘Polestar Spaces’ when it arrives, or order the car online using Polestar’s innovative subscription model.
