BMW digital key plus boosts security

BMW has unveiled its Digital Key Plus technology, which can allow iPhone users to unlock and start their BMW without taking the device out of their bag or pocket. The innovative feature relies on Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology found in the U1 chip of the latest iPhones. It will make its debut in the all-electric BMW iX SUV.

UWB is a short-range, high-bandwidth digital radio technology that can determine the user’s location in an ‘exceptionally precise’ manner. BMW claims this accuracy means that ‘relay attacks’, where a remote key fob’s radio signal is hijacked with the intention of stealing the vehicle, is ‘not possible’.

Apple and BMW have been working with the Car Connectivity Consortium to come up with the Digital Key specification for UWB, which it hopes will provide a global standard for the automotive industry.
