2022 Kia Soul EV Boardmasters Edition is a ‘recycled’ one-off

Kia has revealed a one-off Soul EV Boardmasters Edition, designed to appeal to surfers. The ‘recycled’ preproduction car would usually have to be destroyed, but has instead been modified to live out its retirement on the sand. It was exhibited on Kia’s stand at the surfing and music festival this August.

Its standard alloy wheels have been replaced with white 16-inch steel rims and chunky high-profile Maxxis Bighorn sand tyres, normally seen in off-road competitions and fitted to bespoke rally raid vehicles. These have an overall diameter of 30 inches, which meant reworking the front bulkhead and foot wells. The Soul’s independent suspension has also been given a three-inch lift, while its track widths have increased by around 10 centimetres. Ground clearance has more than doubled, from just over 150mm to more than 310mm. The Soul EV’s 64kWh battery pack and electric motor remain unchanged.

To top it off, a custom-made steel roof rack accommodates a pair of Tahe Bic Malibu surfboards, while still allowing the tailgate to open fully. The rack also houses a pair of LED spotlights and a solar panel that can run a mini fridge or charge devices. The rear seats have been removed, turning the Soul into a two-seater with a huge cargo area. The wooden deck is constructed from spruce sourced from sustainable forests, and stained white for a ‘lighter seaside vibe’.

Opening the boot reveals a fold-out bench made from reclaimed wood, and a swing-out arm that is designed to give surfers a place to dry out damp wetsuits, or hang a towel to create some privacy for changing. the Soul EV‘s standard 10.25-inch infotainment system and Harman Kardon 10-speaker audio system also means it can be used to provide music away from the grid.
