Munich debut planned for rakish 2022 Volkswagen ID.5 GTX

Volkswagen has announced that its all-electric ID.5 GTX SUV Coupé will make its debut at the Munich Motor Show at the start of September. It will appear in ‘near-production concept’ form according to the manufacturer, wearing a funky disguise comprising swirling lines.

The ID.5 GTX is the first SUV Coupé based on the MEB modular platform for battery electric models, that also underpins the ID.3 hatchback and ID.4 SUV, along with the Skoda Enyaq iV and Audi Q4 e-tron. The concept will be fitted with a powerful dual motor four-wheel drive setup. It’s projected to have a driving range of up to 309 miles, and will be just the second EV with the sporty GTX badge, following on from the ID.4 GTX. Power is likely to be the same 295bhp, providing brisk acceleration from 0-62mph in just over six seconds.

Its front-end styling is clearly linked to the ID.4, but the ID.5’s roofline is lower and there are more pronounced haunches over its rear wheels. The roof plunges away behind the rear passenger compartment, and a rakish rear window sits above a lip spoiler and near-vertical boot. A full-width black bar spans the tail, housing segmented rear lights and a red LED strip.
