Tough SsangYong X200 shows off new design direction

SsangYong is poised to shift its design language to a more rugged approach, as previewed in design sketches for a future SUV codenamed ‘X200’. It ushers in a new ‘Powered by Toughness’ philosophy for the South Korean brand, shared with the J100 electric concept revealed in June.

The SUV’s design features angular, jutting wheel arches, a prominent front skid plate and round headlights. There’s also a horizontal black grille with diamond-shaped slots, and lots of flat surfaces, including the bonnet, roof and windscreen for a retro look. It’s a design that wouldn’t look out of place in a Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Jeep Wrangler group test. The sketches also show off a fabric opening roof and a rack for carrying sports gear like surfboards.

Lee Kang, head of the SsangYong Design Centre, said: “We have re-interpreted our future design vision and product philosophy by drawing heavily on our unique heritage. With the forthcoming J100 and X200 models, SsangYong has drawn a line in the sand in terms of design, and everything from this point forward will follow this new brand design direction. It is a very exciting time for SsangYong and will build on the history and heritage of its unique and distinctively authentic SUV designs to impress its customers of the future."
