1 SPARKING A NEW PATH

It’s been a long time since Maserati teased a new GT car – the Alfieri concept debuted back in 2014 – but the ancient GranTurismo and GranCabrio are finally being reborn. The new ‘Folgore’ tag – Italian for ‘lightning’ – will be applied to every new Maserati EV. They’ll all have 800-volt architecture, like electric Porsches.

2 UNDER THE SKIN

Maserati has released a video of its new EV powertrain, showing a carbon tub with an aluminium subframe housing battery packs and space for one front and two rear e-motors. The GranTurismo’s batteries will be built at the Mirafiori Battery Hub in Turin, and Maserati promises that (despite a lack of engine) the new GT will have ‘a unique, distinctive growl.’ Like to seek the sun? Maserati hasn’t forgotten the GranCabrio variant – that’s due in 2023.

3 YOUR CHOICE

Maserati says the GranTurismo will be ‘the brand’s first car to adopt 100 per cent electric solutions’, but don’t rule out one with an engine, either. CAR understands that the V8 of yore is dead; the petrol-powered GranTurismo will use a version of the MC20’s Nettuno V6 detuned to around 550bhp so as to not upstage the range-topping new supercar.

4 THE TRIDENT’S PRONGS

On top of an electric GT, Maserati has already confirmed an EV version of its new Grecale SUV due in 2023 to take on the Porsche Macan EV. And with no electric 911 or 718 confirmed, Maserati may end up a step ahead of Stuttgart, as an electric MC20 also arrives in 2023.

Davide Grasso Maserati CEO

‘Our future is bright. All of our new models will be electrified. With new technologies, Maserati will reach Level 3 autonomy and our new Nettuno engine is state of the art. It’s time for us to be audacious – and audacity for us starts with listening to the consumer, our team-mates and our product.’
