Genesis plans all-electric future from 2025
Hyundai’s premium sub-brand Genesis will only launch zero-emissions vehicles from 2025, with battery electric or hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains. The South Korean manufacturer plans to become a zero-emission brand by 2030, phasing out its combustion-engined models, and set to become carbon-neutral by 2035.
Genesis recently revealed the GV60, which will be its first all-electric model designed from the ground-up. It shares its E-GMP platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. It is also introducing the G80 Electrified, which is an all-electric version of its BMW 5 Series-rivalling executive saloon, expected on sale later this year. While the brand hasn’t revealed its hydrogen fuel-cell plans, parent company Hyundai has significant expertise in the field, having already developed the Nexo fuel-cell vehicle.
The fledgling Genesis brand plans to expand its EV line-up to consist of eight models, with global sales of 400,000 cars per year. Global Head of Genesis, Jay Chang, said: “I am extremely excited to announce the new vision of Genesis for a sustainable future as we open a new chapter in our history”.
Chief Creative Officer, Luc Donckerwolke, added: “Our new architecture will integrate audacious technologies with breathtaking designs, while providing sincere detail-oriented experiences. Warm and exquisite care will be our differentiator.”
