Middle east gets a new 2022 MG GT

The Chinese-specification MG5, which we have covered in recent issues, is going on sale in various countries in the Middle East but as the new MG GT (replacing an older model with the same name).

According to the blurb: “...inspired by the 1972 MGB GT, the all-new MG GT is a coupé-like fast-back sedan that embraces MG’s latest design ethos. The all-new MG GT provides fresh, dynamic good looks and a fighter-jet inspired cabin, offering a thrilling experience in the compact sedan marketplace”. We don’t know why they decided to hinge their MGB GT reference to the year 1972 but no matter; it’s an interesting nod to a classic MG sports car line. Also on sale in the region are the MG ZS, MG HS, the seven-seater MG RX8 and a special MG RX8 Black Edition. MG Motor Middle East operates in Bahrain, Iraq (five cities including Baghdad and Basra), Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. MG’s biggest market in the region continues to be Saudi Arabia, where the brand sold 12,200 units in the first half of 2021 alone.

The new MG GT for the Middle East replaces an older model with the same name and, like that car, is based closely on the contemporary Chinese-market MG5 hatchback (not to be confused with the European MG5 Estate).
