2022 Toyota Aygo X Urban Crossover revealed

Toyota has revealed the Aygo X in full, showcasing the replacement for its city car, which has morphed into a rugged compact crossover vehicle for city streets. Sticking close to the Prologue concept, it will go on sale in spring 2022, with an anticipated price tag of less than £15,000. Unlike the current Aygo, there’ll be no Peugeot or Citroën version this time around, as the Japanese firm has taken full control of the Kolín factory in the Czech Republic.

Based on a shortened version of the TNGA-B platform found underpinning the Yaris, the Aygo X (pronounced Cross) has grown in all directions. It’s now 235mm longer, 125mm wider, 50mm taller and has a 90mm longer wheelbase, resulting in a big boost for interior space, with 45mm more shoulder room for those sitting in the front. Luggage space has also shot up to 261 litres, up from 168 litres. To help drivers feel more comfortable in urban driving, Toyota says visibility has been improved by raising the seat height by 55mm and making the A-pillars 10% steeper, and boasts a 9.4-metre turning circle.

Most enthusiasts will still recognise it as an Aygo, which is a neat piece of design considering everything is new. Its wheel arches have swollen to accommodate standard 17-inch alloy wheels, and there’s prominent SUV-inspired cladding all around its lower surfaces. At the rear, this flows into black wings and a black tailgate and upper bumper, for a unique look. Its LED front and rear lights are also more modern, and it retains the option of a retracting canvas sunroof. While affordability has been key to the interior’s design, there’s kit clearly designed to appeal to the Aygo X’s younger demographic, from its nine-inch touchscreen to a wireless smartphone charging pad and ambient lighting. Wired Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay will also be available, while higher trim levels will get connected services, over-the-air software updates and the ability to check on the car remotely via the MyT smartphone app.

Just one powertrain will be available, which is Toyota’s 1KR-FE three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine, producing 71bhp and 69lb ft of torque, while targeting fuel economy figures of 60mpg and CO2 emissions of 109g/km with a five-speed manual gearbox. A CVT transmission is the only other option, offering 58mpg and CO2 emissions of 110g/km. Safety also gets an upgrade, with Toyota Safety Sense as standard.

It features both a camera and radar sensor, enabling autonomous emergency braking that can spot pedestrians in the day or night, cyclists in daylight and also provide adaptive cruise control and emergency steering assist.
