1 A NEW DIRECTION

Alfa Romeo’s fiveyear plan under new boss Jean-Philippe Imparato is to take advantage of current trends by increasing its SUV offering while also whipping the retailer network into shape. Imparato says Alfa – now part of the giant Stellantis group – is currently profitable, but adds: ‘If you don’t make money, you’re dead.’

2 HELP FROM STELLANTIS

While the STLA Medium platform is exclusive to Alfa and DS, the next Giulia could use STLA Large instead, allowing for battery sizes between 101kWh and 118kWh and e-motor outputs as wild as 443bhp per axle, or range in the region of 500 miles per charge.

3 A FOUR-LEAF E-CLOVER?

Imparato says he is open to the idea that the next Giulia’s high-performance Quadrifoglio range-topper could be an all-electric model. He says he ‘will always study the opportunity to provide a Quadrifoglio version’ of every new model, ‘but if I’m not able to provide the right amount of performance, then I will not do a Quadrifoglio version.’

4 ‘ ONE LAUNCH PER YEAR’

The delayed Tonale will arrive in 2022, the start of a pattern of one new model being launched every year. As well as this electrified Giulia in 2024, Imparato says ‘big launches’ are planned for ’25 and ’26, with a second BEV arriving in 2027. These cars are ‘locked in’, with the rest of the plan still being fleshed out.

Jean-Philippe Imparato CEO, Alfa Romeo

‘Electrification is an existential choice, and we made it. But you cannot be isolated or alone, so our product plan is funded and validated by Stellantis. In 2024 we will have one dream with two engines. One version will be electrified [a plug-in hybrid], but on top of that will be our first BEV option.’
