Jaguar switches to electric faster than EU rivals

New data from New AutoMotive shows Jaguar has made the switch to electric car production faster than the majority of its European rivals. Using data from the DVLA’s vehicle enquiry service and the DVSA’s MOT history, it shows 34 percent of Jaguars sold in the UK during November 2021 were electric models, a higher figure than larger European brands such as Porsche, Renault, Fiat and Audi were able to achieve.

Ben Nelmes, New AutoMotive’s head of policy and research, said the switch will help, “future proof the business. It’s great to see a well-loved British brand lead the way for the UK’s car industry.”

Just 32 percent of Porsche models sold in the same month were electric while only 26 percent of Renault cars were fully electric. Audi has ensured just 23 percent of its sales were electric models while top brands like Nissan, Citroen and Vauxhall were under 15 percent. Even larger companies such as Volvo, Ford, Honda and Toyota produced less than ten percent electric cars from their entire production line.

Continued Ben, “Jaguar committed to become all electric by 2025 and it seems to be well on its way to achieving it. Jaguar’s electric pledge will help to future proof the business. The £2.5billion investment will help upskill its 44,000+ employees in electric technology and future proof UK jobs.

“The other side of the business, Land Rover, which will not produce an electric car until 2024 will have to run to catch up. “We see growing evidence that investors value car companies that make a rapid transition to electric cars.

“UK car manufacturers need to pull out all the stops to get ahead of the electric car curve. We need other UK-based manufacturers to invest in UK-based battery manufacturing if we’re to keep making cars in the UK.”
