Seven-seat 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQB X243 revealed

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the all-electric EQB, its zero-emissions version of the GLB SUV. It expands the German brand’s electric line-up, slotting between the EQA and EQC, while the EQS luxury saloon is its halo product.

Due later this year, the EQB will be offered with seven seats, giving it a unique selling point against the Volkswagen ID.4 and Tesla Model Y. The EQB retains the GLB’s boxy shape, but improves its aerodynamics by adding a closed high-gloss black grille.

A full-width fibre-optic strip also connects the LED daytime running lights for a distinctive appearance, reflected in the coast-to-coast rear lights spanning the boot. The number plate has been moved to the bumper, but roof rails promote the ‘utility value’ of the EQB. While a five-seater edition will be offered in most markets, the third row is expected to be featured as standard in the UK, and it’s capable of seating people up to 5 foot 4 inches tall. While it can seat more occupants, the seven-seater cuts boot space from 495 litres to 465 litres, compared with 500 litres for the diesel engined GLB. Design changes include rose gold air vent trim, along with EQ graphics for the twin 10.25-inch MBUX displays. Full details haven’t been announced yet, but several versions of the EQB will be available, offering differing range and performance levels. Battery sizes will span from 66.5kWh, with top versions exceeding 268bhp. Mercedes-Benz has already confirmed an EQB 350 4MATIC, with a range of 260 miles and four-wheel drive. A ‘particularly long-range version’ is in the works, and models with front-wheel drive will also be offered at a later date. Rapid charging at up to 100kW will be supported, providing a 10 to 80 per cent charge in around 30 minutes. The EQB can also charge at up to 11kW using a home wallbox.

The EQB will be built at the Kecskemét plant in Hungary, produced alongside the GLB SUV, CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake, making it the first battery electric vehicle ever to be built in the country.
