Hot 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 GTX launches new performance badge

Volkswagen has shown off the ID.4 GTX, its first high-performance version of an all-electric model based on the MEB platform. The performance badge will sit alongside ‘GTI’, ‘GTD’ and ‘GTE’, which Volkswagen uses for its performance petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid models. Expected to reach the UK later this year, the ID.4 GTX is likely to cost around £50,000, and misses out on the government’s Plug-in Car Grant.

Performance is bolstered by a second, front-mounted electric motor, which joins the existing 201bhp motor powering the rear wheels. Combined, they give the GTX 295bhp and four-wheel drive, slashing its 0-62mph time to 6.2 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 112mph. In normal conditions, the GTX is rear-wheel drive, but the front motor automatically powers the front axle when more traction or performance is required. The GTX is fitted with the largest 77kWh lithium-ion battery from the ID.4 line-up, giving a range of up to 298 miles.

To back up its performance, the GTX gets a new look to add a more aggressive feel to its design, and link it to the Golf GTI. There’s a honeycomb lower grille, and vertically stacked daytime running lights beneath standard Matrix LED headlights. A deeper rear diffuser, 20-inch alloy wheels (21-inch wheels are an optional extra) and an anthracite roof complete the look, along with an X-shaped graphic for the rear lights. There are some performance additions inside too, from the stainless-steel pedals to a sports steering wheel and a new colour scheme with red stitching.
