Maserati unveils Grecale electric SUV

The Maserati Grecale Folgore will begin the Italian luxury brand’s switch to electric when it arrives in 2023. Based on the combustion-engined version arriving several months sooner, the Folgore will take on the Mercedes-Benz EQC, Jaguar I-Pace and BMW iX3, so it’s likely to start from more than £60,000. The 4,846mm long car is built alongside the Alfa Romeo Stelvio at the Stellantis Cassino factory in Italy and shares its Giorgio platform, albeit significantly re-engineered. Other key dimensions include a 2,901mm wheelbase, width of 2,163mm including door mirrors and a height of 1,670mm. This means the Grecale is larger than the Stelvio, but smaller than the Levante SUV.

Full specifications are still under wraps, but Maserati has teased the fact its electric motors will provide up to 590lb ft of torque, meaning it should be no slouch. It will also be fitted with a large 105kWh battery, that should be capable of providing a range of 350 miles or more, and uses a 400-volt EV architecture for rapid charging.

From outside, the Grecale Folgore looks almost identical to the combustion-engined model, although it will be available with exclusive Rame Folgore copper paintwork and six-spoke aerodynamic alloy wheels. The interior upholstery makes use of a new sustainable material called Econyl, which is a nylon created using recycled fishing nets. The Folgore will feature a 12.3-inch instrument display and 8.8-inch central touchscreen powered by Android Automotive software.
