Historic 1988 Jaguar XJR-9 sold
The winner of the 1990 24 Hours of Daytona was sold at RM Sotherby’s Monaco sale on 14 May 2022 for €1,917,500 (approx. £1,644,689). Chassis TWR-J12C-388 began life in July 1987 and was one of the first three XJR-9s to be built. Made specifically for the IMSA series, it was used throughout the 1988 and 1989 seasons with the highlights being second at five places.
At the 1990 Daytona 24 Hours it was driven by Davy Jones, Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace. Despite being out-qualified by turbocharged competitors, the 6.0-litre V12 Jaguar proved to be strong and reliable. Although suffering from overheating worries towards the end of the race, Lammers still managed to nurse chassis 388 across the line to take a historic victory.
After finishing third at Sebring, 388 was retired and joined TWR’s collection of important cars. Following the company’s bankruptcy in 2002, the car was sold and restored four years later.
