Torres name confirmed for electric SsangYong SUV
SsangYong has confirmed that its SUV codenamed ‘J100’ will be called ‘Torres’ when it reaches showrooms in late 2023. The South Korean brand’s second all-electric model for the European market is named after the Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia.
Designed to adhere to SsangYong’s ‘Powered by Toughness’ strategy, the new Torres will be positioned between the Korando and full-size Rexton in SsangYong’s model range. A SsangYong spokesperson said: “This move will create an additional segment in the market and will open up new opportunities for us, especially as we further develop the product offering and continue to add value and originality.” Entering production this month for the South Korean domestic market – where combustion-engined versions will also be available – the all-electric version for European buyers will follow on ‘towards the end of 2023’.
Following on from the Korando e-Motion electric vehicle launching this year, SsangYong’s second EV will be critical for the manufacturer’s recovery, following the brand entering administration during 2020. The Torres is also set to spawn an all-electric pick-up based on the same platform. Teaser pictures of the Torres SUV show that it has muscular angular lines, with a narrow grille featuring vertical accents, oversized wheel arches, a contrasting roof colour and prominent D-pillar. The tailgate appears to feature bodywork that mimics the look of a concealed spare wheel, conveying a look reminiscent of tough 4x4s from the car maker’s past.
