1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Super Snake auctioned
Mustangs don’t come any rarer than this 1967 Shelby GT500 continuation and it went under the hammer at the end of May!
Washington state auction house Trucks & Auto Auctions sold a unique piece of Mustang history in the form of a 1967 Shelby GT500 continuation which went under the hammer for $602,500 (around £477,000). Shelby American reintroduced the 1967 Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake muscle cars in 2018, and only 10 were built. This is number three of the 10 genuine Shelby Super Snake continuation cars built and the first one that has been available for resale. Finished in Wimbledon White with GT500 side stripe and Guardsman blue Super Snake stripes, it came with full documentation including the all-important Marti report, certificate of authenticity, build sheet, pre-delivery service sheet, photos and much more. Historically there was one original Super Snake built by Carroll Shelby using a lightweight medium riser racing 427 engine, heavy-duty front disc brakes, Detroit locker rear end, rear traction bars and special Goodyear tyres. It also sported unique triple stripes and a redesigned grille for improved cooling. Carroll Shelby personally drove this original car on the test track and was clocked at 170mph. Shelby decided not to produce any more cars at that time, discouraged by how expensive it was to build...
Fast forward 50 years later… Shelby American built only 10 genuine Super Snake Continuation cars from original 1967 Fastback Mustangs. The donor cars were stripped to bare metal and transformed into a Super Snake. Power comes from a race-inspired big-block 427 FE 468 cubic inch all-aluminium V8 producing over 550 horsepower, backed by a top loader fourspeed manual, aluminium driveshaft and nine-inch Ford positraction rear end. It has four-wheel disc brakes and rolls on 17-inch Shelby aluminium wheels and radial tyres. The interior features black deluxe comfort weave bucket seats, rear fold-down seat, roll bar, wood steering wheel, tilt steering column, full gauges, air conditioning and custom Audio Sound stereo.
