NEW G82 M4 CSL BREAKS COVER

With BMW M 50th birthday celebrations in mind comes this – the ultimate M4. The M4 CSL gets a power hike of 40hp over the current M4 Competition Coupé to 550hp and benefits from weight-saving measures designed to make it a yet more focused prospect. The changes have clearly worked when judged in the content of that famous automotive benchmark – the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife lap time. The new CSL lapped the 12.8-mile track in a time of 7:15.677, with an official notarised time for the 12.943-mile circuit – the complete lap – of 7:20.207, that's the best figure yet for a series-produced BMW road car. So what exactly has been done to the already impressive M4 Competition Coupé G82?

Carbon fibre has been employed to reduce weight – 100kg in fact – via a carbon roof, bonnet and boot lid. Even the splitters fitted to the lower edge of the front apron are carbon – they feature red accents and “CSL” lettering, there's a carbon kidney grille too and the exterior mirror caps are made from the same material. The carbon fibre boot lid is a nod to M3 CSL of 2003 with its pronounced spoiler. Inside M Carbon full bucket seats, a carbon fibre centre console and the deletion of the rear seats and belts save further weight. Chassis changes such as the use of lightweight M Carbon ceramic brakes and light-alloy wheels, springs and struts saved a total of 21kg. Switching to ultra-lightweight sound insulation saved a further 15kg.

The Frozen Brooklyn Grey metallic exterior paint finish is exclusive to the M4 CSL, Alpine White and Sapphire Black are also available, meanwhile classic 'BMW Motorsport' emblems appear on the bonnet, boot lid and wheel centres – a nod to the original 1973 BME 3.0 CSL E9.

Other highlights include yellow Laserlight headlights fitted as standard – a reference BMW's GT racing cars, while in the engine bay comes a cast aluminium strut brace increasing rigidity. The new M4 CSL’s rear exhaust silencer is made from titanium, another weight-saving measure cutting 4.3kg over conventional steel. The exhaust system is unique to the model and features twin matt black tailpipes, electronically controlled flaps generate noise. The M Sound Control button on the centre console lets the driver switch to a more restrained soundtrack when needed.

The engine has also come in for work too. The maximum output of 550hp is achieved at 6,250rpm with peak torque of 479lb ft is on tap from just 2,750rpm and sustained up to 5,950rpm. The straight-six has been adapted from racing machinery with a wealth of changes we simply don't have the space to write about here, but rest assured we'll cover them in detail when we get behind the wheel of this epic new machine. All this helps the new CSL to sprint from 0 to 62mph in 3.7-seconds and onto 124mph in just 10.7 seconds – 1.8-seconds quicker than the M4 Competition Coupé. The top speed is an electronically limited 190mph.

Production will begin at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in July and is strictly limited to 1,000 units globally, 100 models are allocated to the UK, priced from £128,820.
