Bugatti’s 2027 hybrid ‘will blow people out the water’

Bugatti’s next all-new car will be fitted with a hybrid powertrain that will be smaller than the outgoing W16 engine and be launched in 2027, DrivesToday can reveal.

It will look “different” from current Bugattis but retain the essence of the brand and have an aerodynamic focus, the marque’s top designers have confirmed.

The model will also sit on a new chassis and is expected to be leaner than the Mistral roadster due to the smaller powerplant.

Speaking about the hybrid engine, Bugatti design director Achim Anscheidt said: “There are opportunities to get just a bit more athletic for the shape of Bugatti in the future, without losing the general gesture of generosity or sovereignty.”

The firm is saying little about its forthcoming model, revealing nothing about the design apart from the hybridised nature of the powertrain.

Other hybrid hypercars range from the 6.5-litre Cosworth V12-powered Aston Martin Valkyrie to the Mercedes-AMG One, which uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 grand prix engine. Something nearer the Aston end of the scale is expected for the next Bugatti.

Speaking to DrivesToday, Bugatti deputy design director Frank Heyl said the new car will “be even more amazing” than the Mistral and has asked fans to “trust us”. He added: “It is going to be amazing, proportionally, technologically, in terms of innovation, in terms of unexpectedness. It is going to blow people out of the water completely, and it is a true joy to work on this.”

The car, which DrivesToday understands has been pencilled for a 2027 release, is expected to cost more than the Mistral’s €5 million (£4.2m) price.

After this model, the firm will look at an electric car, Bugatti Rimac chairman Mate Rimac has said previously.
