Porsche Cayenne drop-top

Twenty years ago, Porsche was trying to figure out whether or not a convertible version of its Cayenne SUV would be a viable product, so it built one.

Legend has it there were two factions that couldn’t decide on what the rear end was supposed to look like, and that’s why this rolling prototype had a famous asymmetrical backside. One group of designers thought it should have the more conventional low-set taillights of the Carrera GT supercar, while the opposing set believed in a new-age rear end with taillights high up on the beltline. This was the look that eventually cracked the nod when the Panamera made its debut.

While the Cayenne convertible never made production, the company would use this prototype to test several technologically advanced features, some of which are in use on Porsche models today.
