The Silverstone Auctions sale at Race Retro on February 24-26 sees several appealing Jaguar lots, including a real curiosity in the shape of a PBB ‘Monaco’.

PBB ‘Monaco’ Jaguar XJ-S curiosity emerges

Produced by the Bristol-based PBB Design run by Paul Bailey – formerly of Glenfrome, famous for outlandish six-wheeled Range Rovers – the Monaco featured significant styling changes. Chief among these was a longer nose featuring an oval grille and widened wheelarches to cover 17-inch Compomotive split-rims, the new panels being made in fibreglass.

The conversion was hugely expensive at £24,500 – and much more with the Rob Beere 7-litre V12 – which explains why only a dozen or so were produced.

This example was originally the Monaco prototype and was later used as the promotional car, before eventually being rebuilt using the original Monaco parts into a newly sourced XJR-S donor car. The JaguarSport 6-litre’s 318bhp is naturally more in keeping with the outlandish looks and in 2000 the car also received a Hyper three-speed clutchless manual gearbox.

It’s certainly something different and it’s estimated at £18,000-£24,000. More details at silverstoneauctions.com
