Skoda will use the VW ID 1 tech to create a more rugged hatch

Skoda’s take on the ID 1 would fill a gap left in its line-up by the diminutive Up-based Citigo-e iV, but crucially it would serve more directly as a successor to the petrol-engined Fabia, whose existence is threatened by the upcoming Euro 7 emissions legislation.

SKODA’S VERSION COULD REPLACE THE FABIA

Starting today from £18,600, the Fabia remains Skoda’s cheapest car, but boss Klaus Zellmer recently told DRIVES-TODAY “it will not be possible” to maintain that price point if Euro 7 rules are signed off in their current form. The equipment and development needed to meet the existing proposals would push the price closer to £20,000, Zellmer said, adding: “Is that a feasible proposal for consumers? I don’t think so.”

No doubt more rugged in its conception than the ID 1, in line with Skoda’s larger upcoming EVs, the Czech brand’s new entry-level car could slot in at this price to underpin the firm’s value billing and its status as a front-runner for superminis.
