Cupra UrbanRebel concept previews small EV

The Cupra UrbanRebel concept might look like a track-only touring car, but it previews an entry-level small EV based on the ‘MEB short’ platform. This will form the basis of a range of Volkswagen Group electric urban vehicles including the VW ID.2, and Cupra plans to launch its small EV in 2025 with an anticipated target price of around £17,000.

According to Cupra, the production version ‘will mix astonishing design with supreme dynamics’. Making its physical debut at the Munich motor show, the UrbanRebel concept introduces new Cupra design themes, including a ‘negative surface’ shark nose and a new triangular signature for its headlights. Like the Tavascan Concept, it also features wrap-around windows that are said to give a similar visual effect to a racing helmet.

The rear is an evolution of the Cupra Formentor’s styling, while its wedge-like side profile has incredibly tight overhangs and a short bonnet. Despite its four-metre length, a long wheelbase should afford the production car excellent interior space.

With a motorsport-inspired design, the UrbanRebel’s EV powertrain is said to produce 335bhp, with a 429bhp ‘overboost’ function and a 0-62mph time of just 3.2 seconds. Power is likely to be more restrained for a production version, that will be designed mostly for urban driving.
