While we love the flat-six howl of a Porsche GT3 Cup car, it’s hard not to be impressed by its electric successor of sorts: the Mission R Concept. Tipping the scales at 1 500 kg (that’s light for an EV) the Mission R sports a zero to 0-62mph (100 km/h) sprint time of under 2,5 seconds and a top speed north of 300 km/h. In short, it is electrifyingly quick. In Qualifying mode, it develops more than twice the power of a current GT3 Cup car, with 800 kW. To save the tyres and make the charge last, 500 kW is on tap in Race mode, and Porsche reveals it will not overheat during long track sessions thanks to the use of an extensive cooling system.

“The only time I’ve ever experienced such an amazingly powerful boost sensation was in the Le Mans-winning Porsche 919 Hybrid car,” says former works driver and current test driver, Timo Bernhard. That ought to indicate just how rapid the Mission R is.

Range anxiety is put to rest thanks to 900 V technology and fast-charging capability. According to Porsche, it takes around 15 minutes to charge the battery from five to 80 per cent, ideal between track stints then. Located behind the driver, the battery is positioned in an e-core layout with a total capacity of 82 kWh. This means it is designed for a sprint race format distance of 25 to 40 minutes.

Porsche hopes to start producing Mission Rs for customers from 2025 and says the electric track car is equipped with a drag reduction system (DRS) and an adjustable front splitter and rear wing to reach higher speeds down the straights, just like a Formula One car.

Wouldn’t it be great if Porsche entered F1 as well under the new regulation? Now, that would be something.
